Inside the sanctuary the most prominent feature is the elevated central pulpit, because the Protestant Reformers made preaching of the Word the key part of worship.

The Word of God, we must remember is “living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb. 4:12). By God’s blessing, preaching that is faithful to the Word is a spiritually transforming event. “Faith comes by hearing the Word”, Paul tells us in Romans 10. The high central pulpit is an indication of the importance of preaching as the central event in worship. The elevation of the pulpit is not to highlight the preacher, rather the large wooden pulpit highlights the importance of the preached Word of God.
